The Last Stand

The Castle went down in flames in the main event. There were eleven of us and not one made it past the second afternoon. Now most have left and only a few of us remain in the cavernous dwelling. I'm sitting alone in the basement with the shades drawn listening to Bob Dylan. It's 109 degrees today and supposed to be 110 tomorrow. But it's not time to leave yet.

It's been seventy two hours since I busted out of the main event. During that time I've spent about four hours at the gym, two hours swimming, and another two sunbathing. I've consumed eight to twelve beers and one bottle of Knob Creek with some assistance. I've watched about five hours of WSOP Europe and four episodes of Lost.

I played two poker tournaments, the Tilt 1k Monday and the Stars 1k Tuesday. I cashed in both. I played a little tighter and a little more aggressively. I decided I've been taking the passive/small-ball approach a little too far recently. You have to get chips somehow.

The Bellagio Cup $15k WPT starts Friday and I will be playing. It ain't over till it's over.

Has anybody else had a Pi-esque day after busting?
I'm glad you haven't had any thoughts about stopping playing, as in the last couple of years, although i'm sure you deserve a break soon. I gotta say I am both happy about your relaxation techniques and somewhat disappointed. Knob Creek? C'mon...Although maybe I'll get shouted down on Knob Creek like I did on Deron Williams.

Carpe diem. Kick ass in the Bellagio tournament. You put yourself in a great postion when you became a successful pro poker player. Things could be a lot worse - you could be stuck in a 9-5 job making not a lot of money. Stay positive, motivated, focus on making good decisions, and the results will come.

Poker is about the long term.

Knob Creek is the best mid-range bourbon on the market.

I agree that Knob Creek is a pretty good mid-range bourbon, but is that what you are really looking for to wash away sorrows? My feeling is you gotta go with something very quality (Maker's at least) or just screw it and go for the Old Crow. I feel as if Knob Creek is like picking up Ben Gordon instead of Gilbert Arenas.

Interestingly enough Spencer, both Maker's and Gilbert Arenas are quite overrated. Knob Creek was the best available at Albertson's.

Is Arenas really that overrated? Other than yours his is the only blog I've ever enjoyed reading. The Albertson's selection makes sense.

Arenas is the best athlete blogger I think we can agree on that.

I thought a "bottle of knob creek with assistance" was code for your friend sucked you off down by the river.

no, you are the best athlete blogger. But would Gilbert ever drink Knob Creek? I guess if it was the best his local supermarket had to offer he would, but he would get every penny out of it by drinking in his hyperbaric chamber.

Gilbert $111 for 5 years is probably the worst deal signed this year by any team. It's the Rashard Lewis deal of the year. As a Wiz fan, we weren't that much worse without him and now we'll go back to stand around and watch Gilbert offense and no defense. He is definitely overrated from a team improvement perspective.

He is also the funniest professional athlete i've ever seen, but that doesn't take you to the second round of the playoffs.

I definitely agree that Arenas needs to put some heart into his defense, which is an appropriate indictment of the entire Arizona basketball program except for Jason Terry (who was a great college defender because of his length). I wish this wasn't the case, obviously, but that is not to detract from the offense output of some of Zona's players. I'd put the 2001-2008 UA All-Stars team up against most NBA teams. Arenas, Bayless, Frye, Walton, Jefferson, starting five. I may actually do this in NBA Live.

Funny that the comments for the last two posts - about busting out of the main event and signing up for another tournament - become diatribes on girls, Knob Creek, and Gilbert Arenas. Really though those are three things I have a great interest in so no problem, commentors.

I don't apologize only because I think distraction is the best medicine. However, your comment got me looking back at last year's blog about this time. It is good to not see a big picture of a DONK, and I definitely think the comments have improved, even if they haven't been the most somber. On another note, kick ass tomorrow.
