Top Ten Fruits

A week ago, my friend Amanda and I got into a somewhat heated discussion over the merits of the watermelon, which culminated in a bet on which one of us could come up with a better, "more accurate" ranking of fruits. So please cast a vote on which list is better along with your own thoughts in the comments section.

Amanda's List:

10. Orange
9. Blueberry
8. Banana
7. Kiwi
6. Apple
5. Raspberry
4. Strawberry
3. Peach
2. Plum
1.Watermelon

Moon's List:

10. Apricot
9. Peach
8. Guava

7. Pineapple
6. Raspberry
5. Blackberry
4. Coconut
3. Avocado
2. Cherry
1. Strawberry

You know it's the dead season when people start blogging about fruits...too early for football, done with poker, no basketball

Amandas far and away outdoes your list here....although I wouldn't put watermelon that high....Moon, youre simply getting too cute with this list, too many exotic fruits that sound much more enticing than they actually are.

Amanda's blows yours away.

I think i would only take two of your ten to replace two of Amanda's...replace her apple with your cherry, and her blueberry with your pineapple, but seriously, i don't know anyone that likes: Guava, Apricot, or Coconut...unless they are the flavors of fruity mixed drinks you get on vacation.

p.s. maybe that should be the next list you create...Top ten fruity mixed drinks...you would dominate, i'm sure.

Although i strongly disagree with Amanda's #1 pick and strongly agree with yours, i have to vote for Amanda's. If it weren't for your avocado and coconut picks, i think i might have voted for yours. By the way, what is a guava?

Question: How come Amanda doesn't want your Cherry?

Amanda's wins by far simply because it has apple and orange while yours has neither. There's a reason those fruits are so ubiquitous, they are delicious.

amanda's, and she probably likes better music than you too.

Spencer's logic is, as usual, backward. ubiquity does not, in the least, insure quality (is McDonalds the best restaurant in america - or starbucks the best coffee). it does insure ubiquity.

"Top Ten Fruits" is a totally misleading name. If this was a "you can only live with the following ten fruits" than amanda wins hands down (for the somewhat bogus reason spencer gives). if its not then your inclusion of avocado is a game ender. fuck apples and oranges both. why no tomato love, though?

No Tomato, and no grapes?! You both lose. Suck it

No Watermelon, Apple, Orange or Banana on your list? That's inexplicable. Amanda wins, hands down!

Top ten mixed drinks, that's a list I'd like to see.

The way I would rank best fruits would be how much the fruit makes your culinary life better overall. Which ought to include eating the fruit by itself along with other functions of the fruit.

Notes on y'alls lists

amanada) Watermelon is sure tasty on a summer afternoon, but number one is a total joke. It serves no other function and is a bit of a pain to cut open.

moon) Coconut is the worst pick on the list. Cherry I don't really see either, but that is more personal taste.

Overall I think both lists are inaccurate and have a hard time voting. Maybe it's just because I am italian, but any list without tomatoes and olives seems ridiculous.

My rough draft:

1.Tomato - barbecue sauce, bloody mary, bruschetta, fried green tomatoes, gazpacho, ketchup, pizza, salsa, sun dried tomatoes, tomatoes sauce
2.Olive - everything from extra virgin cooking oil to bath products to martinis
3.Avocado
4.Apple
5.Banana
6.Strawberry
7.Blackberry
8.Blueberry
9.Mango
10.Tangerine

Ben, i see where you're going, but if you read my post carefully I'm not saying that apples and oranges are popular because they are ubiquitous, they are ubiquitous because they are popular (also, who's to say that Wal-mart isn't the best corporation in America, based on pure size it definitely is, but again, I see where you're going and understand your perspective). I do like the pear and tangerine shout outs, but that is too specialized a taste for me. And although enjoyable occasionally, I don't think I could ever just sit down and eat an avacodo (although i don't know about doing that with a tomato or lime either, so I guess I'm a bit of a hypocrite). As for you grapefruit nuts out there...really?!?!? Since I refuse to be just a critic here is my top ten:

10. Cherry
9. Lime
8. Banana
7. Watermelon
6. Apple (I'm not going to distinguish types)
5. Blueberry
4. Peach
3. Strawberry
2. Tomato
1. Orange

Here is my list...which is clear domination. Amanda's list was much more my style...the fact that the apricot even got mentioned made me laugh pretty hard. GROSS. And yes I realize the tomato is a fruit but I can't really think of things like tomato and avocado in the same way that I think about sweet fruit. So....yeah...I won't include them.

10. Apple (Fuji is my fav. or Macintosh and clearly Peanut Butter is a great addition to this fruit!)
9. Grapes (Seedless)
8. Blackberry
7. Kiwi
6. Cherry (Rainers dominate)
5. Pinapple
4. Strawberry
3. Watermelon
2. Pear
1. Nectarine

Sorry dude, she crushed you. Blackberry in the top 10? Coconut? Come on. Props for Avocado, which should be a food group of its own but as many others pointed out, your list was way too fancy.
