What terms is this list decided by? Living there? Visiting? People? Natural wonders? Or the whole package?

ALASKA #2??? First you leave "The Hurricane" off your Dylan songs, then Alaska beats out 48 states who were admitted before it (not counting Hawaii) in overall ranking. 90% of Alaska is completely impossible to live in. Maybe after global warming kicks it up a couple notches I could see this, but I don't know what to think about a bunch of Caribou and oil. On the other hand, I really enjoy these top 10 lists. Potential suggestions: Top Ten Books, Top Ten Celebrities, and Top Ten places that Reid will be in one year

I know it barely made your list but Florida?

Oh. My. God. It's not just about sports teams, dude. This state is weird, completely redneck, and weird. www.Fark.com even has a category just for the weird stuff that happens in Florida, not to mention the fact that Carl Hiaasen makes millions writing books that all take place in the moral and genetic twilight zone that is "the Sunshine State." Oh and this state's environmental issues are off the chart. What about Minnesota, Arizona, or New York?

As for other top 10s, how about:

sports matchups this year
types of facial hair you can't grow
cities to live in
poker pros
poker tourneys
tv actresses currently on a show

Truman come on Florida should easily be in the top 5. There is a reason more people are moving to FL every day than any other state. Minnesota? You couldn't pay me to live in Minnesota!

Actually...more people are moving to Nevada everyday than any other state, but that's not a reason to put it on the list. My only question for you Moon is this: How many times have you visited some of the states on your list if at all?

Yes it's because they are dying. Florida is the world's largest Hospice.

California is easily the most versatile state. It has the ocean, mountains, forests, and great weather. However, the people that live there take it off the #1 spot.

My first reaction is that while you've traveled plenty more than I have, I don't think you're qualified to make this list because you can't have possibly seen all that much of the 50 states. I thought about it a little more though and I realized that Tom Fuller isn't very concerned with places and sights, it's more things like whether and scenery, so all the more power to you I guess. Personally I don't care about those things that much so I'd find a top cities list much more worthwhile.

California? Have you lived there? All those people, traffic and raider fans... I really think you need to reconsider. I know you probably don't want to be a homer, but Colorado is the shiite and very hard to beat.

No mention of Maryland? Disgusting.

your personal experiences aside, as someone who has lived both in minnesota and california, i cannot imagine that "livability" factored heavily into your rankings. california may have been the birthplace of a great (important?) things - hollywood and the personal computer as decent examples - but seriously? it is as fucked up as they come. sometimes i like to think that biggie was speaking of how to run a state when he said mo money mo problems. wildfires, earthquakes, immigration battles with crazy zealots on both sides, traffic and 4 dollar gas - these may not be as salient as tv/movies and computers, but they make living here just a tiny bit less fun.
also - spence was right - where is the hurricane?

Decided by "whole package."
90% of Alaska unlivable but the other 10%...oh baby.
Florida was a questionable inclusion, no doubt, but a lot of good stuff down there.
Minnesota - forget about it.
Somewhat embarassed to say I have never been to Florida, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. Admittedly, this list depends heavily on reputation.
Top cities list might be in the works.
California has so many great things going for it, it has by far the best and most versatile geography, fantastic cities, etc - in California you can find just about anything you'd want to find, and you can find the best of it.
